For the 10th week, political prisoner Madame Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, Chair of FDU-Inkingi, is denied visit.
Today, the visitors were intimidated by a heavy anti-riot police deployment around the Kigali 1930 maximum prison. Mr. Sylvain Sibomana, FDU-Inkingi interim Secretary General was ordered by one of the CID officers to vacate the prison perimeter and go out of sight. Over 80 people wanted to pay tribute to their political leader.
Madame Victoire Ingabire has been arrested on 14 October 2011 and the government of Rwanda is requesting a life sentence for acts of terrorism, genocide ideology, divisionism, threatening state security, and complicity in forming an armed group. Inside Rwanda, all the key opposition leaders are in maximum prison. Credible and persistent reports suggest that there are plans to eliminate opposition leaders inside and outside Rwanda. On 14 July 2010, Mr. Andre Kagwa Rwisereka, the first Vice President of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, was found beheaded in Butare (Rwanda). On 19 June 2010, General Kayumba Nyamwasa survived a first life attempt in Johannesburg; in February 2011, the Belgian security services prevented an attempt against Dr. Gerald Gahima in Brussels; on 12 May 2011, the London Metropolitan Police warned two members of the opposition of threats from the Rwandan government. On 16 May 1998, a key opposition leader, the former Interior Minister Seth Sendashonga was gunned down in Nairobi (Kenya).
Once again, we invite the RPF government to release all political prisoners, to open up the political space and to allow independent investigations on attempts and threats against opposition members.
